| Info/Notes: | Norwood “Billy” Poindexter – Percussionist
Billy’s musical experience began at the age of 10 with a drum set and started playing the trumpet by his early teen years. He began playing congas in the early 70’s while living in Los Angeles, and by the early 80’s he relocated to northern California and started sitting in with his father, Pony Poindexter, the legendary jazz alto and soprano sax player. It was through Pony’s influence that Billy learned the art of playing jazz and improvisation. Other musical influences have been Chano Puzo, who played with the awesome Dizzy Gillespie, Poncho Sanchez who played with the incredible Cal Tjader, and the late great Ray Barreto. While living in the Bay Area, Billy played in most of the local jazz spots in Oakland and San Francisco. By the late 80’s, he had moved back home to Seattle where he presently resides. Billy has played in probably every club that has live music in the Pacific Northwest, and has gigged with the likes of Woody Woodhouse, George Griffin, Deems Tsutakawa and Seattle Groove, Society’s Child, Andre Thomas and Quiet Fire, Certain Moods, Entourage, and Groove Alley which was led by the late great Michael McClellan on guitar. He also played in the Seattle Central Community College Jazz Band led by jazz drummer Brian Kirk. Billy was co-leader with Lee Cronbach of a jazz quintet called Creation City, and through this collaboration co-arranged and recorded two CD’s. The 2nd CD entitled “Blues for Pony” is a tribute to his father, Pony Poindexter and is also the title of the CD. The CD includes an original composition co-written by Billy and Lee Cronbach and three of Pony’s original tunes. In early 2006, Billy formed his own group called The Poindexter Jazz Quartet, and continues to do what brings him the most joy – playing music. |
